FIELD VISIT TO DHULIKHEL HOSPITAL

The third batch of the Master’s in Health Informatics program visited Dhulikhel Hospital, a partner institution of Kathmandu University, Nepal.

This academic field visit aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to the practical implementation of hospital information systems in a real-world healthcare setting.

During the visit, the hospital’s IT and Health Informatics teams provided an in-depth orientation on the design, development, and deployment of Dhulikhel Hospital’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. The students learned about how patient data is managed electronically across different departments, including registration, outpatient and inpatient services, laboratory, pharmacy, and billing.

The team also shared insights into the hospital’s journey in building a robust and scalable EMR system, highlighting key features such as user-friendly interfaces, role-based access controls, clinical decision support, and reporting functionalities. Discussions included the challenges faced in system integration, data security, capacity building, and sustainability in the context of a resource-limited setting.
