The Department of Health Informatics (DoHI) at the School of Engineering, Kathmandu University (KU), recently hosted an international delegation as part of a week-long program organized by GIZ, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and Expertise France. The delegation included representatives from Ethiopia, Senegal, Zambia, the European Commission in Brussels, and the ILO headquarters in Geneva.
The event, held at KU’s Dhulikhel campus, was hosted by Assistant Professor Santosh Khanal, Acting Head of DoHI. The delegates received a warm welcome from Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle, Acting Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of Kathmandu University. Associate Prof. Dr. Rabindra Bista, Chairperson of the Health Informatics Program’s subject committee and NEEM project lead, shared his journey of establishing the Masterโs in Health Informatics program at KU. He highlighted the challenges faced during the program’s inception and discussed the evolving landscape of health informatics in Nepal.
One of the highlights of the visit was a discussion on the implementation of openIMIS, a digital platform designed to streamline Nepalโs health insurance system. The delegates explored its integration into the “Health Financing and Economics” course within the Masterโs in Health Informatics program.
The Health Informatics Lab at KU also served as a focal point of the exchange. The lab facilitates research and training on interoperability between digital health tools such as DHIS2 and OpenMRS, critical components of the NEEM Project. These tools play a vital role in enhancing data-driven decision-making and improving health service delivery in Nepal.
This visit underscored the significance of global collaboration in advancing health informatics and fostering innovative solutions for health system challenges. The contributions of GIZ, ILO, and Expertise France were instrumental in making this exchange a success, paving the way for continued partnerships in the field of health informatics.
